Neanderthal man in Boeotia
By Yannis Pantazis
Near the Akraifnio of Boeotia, lies one of the most important
archaeological cave in Greece. It remains unknown to the general public, is
unreachable, has difficult access, is fenced off and excavations continue. It
is the Sarakinos cave or Sarakinos or Sarakiniko.
Excavations in Sarakinos Cave were initiated by Th. Spiropoulos (1973),
while Professor Adamantios Sampson has been in charge of the excavator from the
1990s until today.
Excavations have yielded a staggering number of findings both in species
and in large numbers. According to Adamantios Sampson, they have found:
- Mesolithic tools
- Mesolithic artifacts
- Paleolithic human teeth (10,000 BC)
- vessels from all the Neolithic periods
- 200,000 single-grain wheat seeds
- 1,500 Neolithic figurines
- too many storage jars
- human burials, skeletons and many skulls
- 11,000 beads possibly belonging to 100 circular necklaces with each
bead 2-3 mm each.
The multitude of findings found throughout the stratigraphy, which was
strikingly undisturbed, tells us that the cave was used continuously from the
Paleolithic to the historical years, proving a smooth and indigenous succession
in the wider area.
The photograph shows the historical and covered section B today, which
gave the findings of the Paleolithic period.
