Αρχαίοι ηλιακοί δίσκοι-ωρολόγια

Περίπου 600 ηλιακοί δίσκοι σώζονται από την αρχαία ελληνική και ρωμαϊκή εποχή.
Οι αρχαίοι δίσκοι-ωρολόγια κυμαίνονται από τεράστια πέτρινα μνημεία έως μικρές, φορητές συσκευές για τον μορφωμένο ταξιδιώτη και δείχνουν μεγάλη ποικιλία στον σχεδιασμό που μαρτυρά την δημιουργικότητα των αρχαίων κατασκευαστών τους.
Οι ηλιακοί δίσκοι θα μπορούσαν επίσης να φέρουν πολιτικές, φιλοσοφικές ή θρησκευτικές έννοιες. Εμφανίζονται συχνά στην αρχαία τέχνη.

Ancient Sundials

Nearly six hundred sundials are preserved from ancient Greek and Roman times.  Ancient dials range from massive stone monuments to small, portable devices for the educated traveler, and show a great variety in design testifying to the creativity of ancient dial-makers. Sundials could also carry political, philosophical or religious meanings, and they appear often in ancient art. This richly illustrated lecture will explore the significance of all these aspects of ancient sundials.
