A day at the rich land of Argolis

A day at the rich land of Argolis

Traveling with a not that promising cloudy sky we arrived at our first stop, the village of Ancient Epidaurous. A romantic, almost depressing, scenery welcomed us. An empty village and the smell of the bloomed orange trees mixed with the salty smell of the sea was our companion for our morning coffee.

We took the provincial road directed to Assini. We were alone on the road but that was perfect for our slow driving. We had so much to see. With the help of our guide, mr. Lekakis, we were able to locate many hidden beauties, a church built with stones from an ancient temple...

...a destroyed acropolis on top of a hill, unknown tombs-pyramids

And as we were driving we came across with the most ancient stone bridge! Just like that. With only two sights informing us about its existence. Hidden in the nature, built back in 1.300 b.C. only with stones and without unified material. It is standing there for so many years then so many other things are coming apart…

Arriving at Assini the strong smell of the sea hit us on the face...
It was a refreshing sniff of fresh air...

The archaeological site was so clean and organized (for the Greek standards). Hellenic herbs were planned allover giving you the felling you travelled back in time. Sighs guided us all around after the short welcoming-informing video in a tiny room.

The view was breathtaking. You could not possible focus on the history because of that. The sound of the waves was the background melody of our guided tour. We became one with the place. The blue of the sea, the green of the nature, the grey of the sky… What else could we possibly need?

Food! We headed to Nafplio for our late lunch. The sun started to shine at last and the clouds disappeared. Finally refilled with energy and relaxed we visited the church of Saint Spyridon when we heard the untold facts about the assassination of the first Greek governor, Kapodistrias / Capodistrias.

Admiring the sunset over the island of Bourzi / Bourtzi we closed our trip to the unknown beauties of Argolis.
