του Andrew Koh
του MIT
Την
Ο Andrew Koh (*), από το MIT Center for Materials
Research και το Harvard Semitic Museum, θα ανοίξει μια συζήτηση στο Ανοιχτό Κέντρο Ελληνικών Σπουδών / Center for Hellenic Studies Online
Open House, με τίτλο «A Land Called Crete: From Harriet Boyd Hawes to the
Cretan Collections Project».
(Θυμίζω ότι ο A. Koh ξεκίνησε
αποδείξεις για την σύνδεσή της με την Αθήνα / Mycenoan Crete - Archaeological Evidence for the Athenian Connection, από
τον Andrew J. Koh.
Και:
Odyssey, part 1, από τον Gregory Nagy.
«Thou puttest great terror of me in the hearts of their chiefs; the fear
and dread of me before them; that I may carry off their warriors[2],
bound in my grasp, to lead them to thy ka, O my august father, – – – – –. Come,
to [take] them, being: Peleset (Pw-r'-s'-t)[3],
Denyen (D'-y-n-yw-n')[4],
Shekelesh (S'-k-rw-s)[5].
Thy strength it was which was before me, overthrowing their seed, – thy might,
O lord of gods».
foreign countries made a conspiracy in their islands, All at once the lands
were removed and scattered in the fray. No land could stand before their arms:
from Hatti, Qode, Carchemish, Arzawa[6]
and Alashiya[7]
on, being cut off[8] at
one time. A camp was set up in Amurru. They desolated its people, and its land
was like that which has never come into being. They were coming forward toward
Egypt, while the flame was prepared before them. Their confederation was the
Peleset, Tjeker[9],
Shekelesh, Denyen and Weshesh, lands united. They laid their hands upon the
land as far as the circuit of the earth, their hearts confident and trusting:
'Our plans will succeed!'».

Ποιοι, όμως, τελικώς ήταν αυτοί οι λαοί;

(*) Andrew Koh received a B.S. in Biophysics and the Classics from the
University of Illinois, an M.A. in Ancient Near Eastern Studies from Biblical
Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Art & Archaeology of the
Mediterranean World from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a graduate
fellow at the Penn Museum Corinth Computer Project and a Colburn Fellow at the
American School of Classical Studies in Athens. He initially honed his
interdisciplinary approach to the classical world by characterizing a perfumed
oil workshop at the Minoan harbor town of Mochlos, dissertation research he
completed as an exchange scholar at the Stanford University Department of
Classics and the inaugural Archaeological Institute of America Pomerance
Fellow. Koh is currently a senior research fellow at the MIT Center for
Materials Research in Archaeology & Ethnology and a research associate
at the Harvard Semitic Museum. He founded the ARCHEM Project in 2003 and now
serves as the co-editor-in-chief of its interdisciplinary and collaborative
archaeometric database.
Koh utilizes both traditional and scientific methods to better
understand cross-cultural interactions and complex societies through their organic
commodities and branded goods. This approach integrates text, material culture,
and material science, illuminating previously invisible data sets to address
questions of culture and society. This blended approach offers exciting new
ways forward for Classics and archaeology by introducing processes, social
groups, and practices absent from other records. This interdisciplinary, longue
durée approach underlies his monograph, Luxury Trade and Social Complexity in
the Ancient Mediterranean World, which is under contract with Cambridge
University Press.

the full flame was in front of them at the Nile mouths, while a stockade of
lances surrounded them on the shore, prostrated on the beach, slain, and made into
heaps from head to tail» – βλ. Michael G. Hasel «Merenptah's

«Ramesses III incorporated the Sea Peoples as subject peoples and settled
them in southern Canaan. Their presence in Canaan may have contributed to the
formation of new states in this region such as Philistia after the collapse of
the Egyptian Empire in Asia. Ramesses III was also compelled to fight invading
Libyan tribesmen in two major campaigns in Egypt's Western Delta in his Year 5
and Year 11 respectively». – βλ. Nicolas Grimal «A
