The National Committee of Byzantine Studies of Georgia, member of the
International Association of Byzantine Studies (AIEB), in solidarity with other
National Committees of the AIEB, expresses its deepest concern with the regard
to possible change of previously assigned status of the Hagia Sophia Museum.
Possible change of the status of Hagia Sophia may have irremediable
prejudice in terms of its scholarly studies as part of the UNESCO World
Heritage site as well as its protection, care and maintenance.
We voice a hope that Hagia Sophia’s current museum status, assigned as
far back as in the year 1934, will still be preserved.
On behalf of
Georgian National Committee of Byzantine Studies of Georgia
President,
Dr. Erekle Jordania
